Whether you’re watching TV, listening to the radio, reading your favourite newspaper, or browsing the Internet, you’re likely to come across complicated stock market figures. Knowing how to read and understand stock quotes is an essential part of managing a portfolio of equities. This article will help you expand your level 1 quote reading skills. Level 1 quotes provides the most basic and essential information you need to know before making a trade, including bid/ask/last prices, etc.

To start, choose your preferred trading platform.

    To access level 1 stock quotations:

    1. Log in to Questrade Trading
    2. In the main toolbar, click/tap Watchlist
    3. Click/tapUser-added imageand then Manage watchlists

    With our free standard data package, by default quotes for Canadian and U.S. securities are delayed by 15 minutes, unless you've subscribed to the enhanced streaming, or one of the advanced data packages.

    Quotations dataDescription
    Bid Refers to price you receive when you selling an equity. In other words, the highest price the market is willing to pay for this security
    Bid sz The number of shares in board lots being offered at the bid price. On Canadian markets, one board lot is 100 shares for securities valued over $1.00, 500 shares for securities valued between $0.10 and $1.00, and 1,000 shares for securities valued under $0
    Ask Refers to price you pay when you buy an equity; in other words, the lowest price the market is willing to accept for this security
    Ask sz The number of shares in board lots being offered at the ask price. On Canadian markets, one board lot is 100 shares for securities valued over $1.00, 500 shares for securities valued between $0.10 and $1.00, and 1,000 shares for securities valued under $0.10. On U.S. markets, one board lot is 100 shares for all securities. For option orders, one board lot is one option contract
    LastThe price at which the last trade on the stock occurred
    HighThe highest price paid for the security today
    LowThe lowest price paid for the security today
    OpenThe price the security traded at when the markets opened
    Prev. closeThe price the security traded at when the markets closed the previous trading day
    VolThe trading volume for the current day
    Last tradeThe date and time the security was last traded at
    52w highThe highest price the security traded at over the past 52 weeks
    52w lowThe lowest price the security traded at over the past 52 weeks
    Mkt capThe total value of all outstanding shares of the security
    Avg volThe number of shares owned by the public, company officers, and insiders
    EPSEarnings per share: a company's profit divided by its number of common outstanding shares
    P/EA valuation ratio of the current share price compared to its earnings per share
    DivThe distribution of a security’s earnings to shareholders
    YieldThe income return on an investment displayed as an annualized percentage
    Ex-dateShareholders who purchased the stock before this date will receive the dividend for that dividend period. Shareholders who bought the stock on or after the ex-dividend date will not receive the dividend
    VenuesThe trading venues where the security is traded
    Security typeThe type of security (e.g., stock, option)

    To access level 1 stock quotations:

    1. Log in to IQ Edge
    2. In the top left corner, click Level 1
    3. Enter the name or symbol of the company you’d like to review

    To modify this level 1 window with the data that is most relevant to you, click the downward arrow on the top right User-added image, and then click Select fields to insert or remove data from this window. With our free defualt standard data package, quotes for Canadian and U.S. securities are delayed by 15 minutes, unless you've subscribed to the enhanced streaming, or one of the advanced data packages.
