Viewing and understanding your positions

The positions tab on your trading platform allows you to conveniently track and manage your investments. From this tab, you can view your open and closed positions, average price, market value, and much more. Below, select your preferred trading platform to learn more about your positions.

  • Questrade Trading

    To access the position tab:
    1. Log in to Questrade Trading
    2. In the main toolbar, click/tap Account
    3. Click/tap Positions

    As shown below, you can view your investments by different asset types or group them by position, underlying, and strategy.

    By default, the platform shows you key information about your positions such as open and closed quantity, average price, current price, market value, position percentage of the portfolio, and profit and loss. However, you can add more information about your positions.

    To do so:

    1. Click/tap this icon User-added image
    2. Click/tap + to add fields or - to remove fields

    Refer to this chart to understand how each column can help you manage your positions.

    ColumnDescription
    SymbolThe ticker symbol for the security in a short format
    Open qtyNumber of shares or contracts that are currently held for a specific symbol. A negative figure appears for short positions, and zero appears for positions that have been closed out in the current trading day (intraday)
    Closed qtyNumber of shares or contracts closed on one of your positions.
    PriceCurrent security price
    Mkt valueCurrent market value of the security
    % portfolioProportion of the current position's market value over the entire portfolio. This is available only on main positions, not on sub-positions
    % P&L dayDaily percentage of profit and loss figures for a position’s open quantities
    P/L openProfit and loss figures for the open quantities of the position
    Closed P&LRealized profit and loss (P&L) figures in your account. This includes closed positions during the current day, and realized P&L values for positions you still hold
    Avg priceAverage price at which the account entered the position
    CurrencyDomicile currency of the symbol that is referenced to in the position
    Date/TimeIndicates when the position has been added
    Entry priceEntry price of the underlying position
    MarketIndicates the market on which the position trades (based on the symbol shown)
    P/L dayDaily profit and loss figures for the open quantities of the position
    Sec typeDisplays information on the type of security based on the symbol
    Total valueTotal value of the current position. Available only on main positions, not on sub-positions
    Expsingle-leg and multi-leg options Note: for options strategies, the parent row will be blank. Each child row will display the expiry date for each strategy leg separately
    Days to expNumber of days remaining until the option contract is no longer valid. For example, if the current date is March 20, 2013, and the expiration date is March 25, 2013, then the Days to exp field shows 5
    Strike For option strategies, the parent row will be blank. Each child row shows the individual strike price for each strategy leg
    Option type For single-leg options - shows whether the option type is a call or a put. For multi-leg options, the parent row will be blank. Each child row will display the corresponding option type for each strategy leg
    Strategy type Name of the strategy being implemented. Only the parent row will be populated; child rows will appear blank
    DeltaRatio comparing the change in the price of the underlying asset to the corresponding change in the price of a derivative. This field is available for single options and the parent and child rows of option strategies
    Gamma Rate of change for delta with respect to the underlying asset's price. This field is available for single options and the parent and child rows of option strategies
    Vega Amount that the price of an option changes compared to a 1% change in volatility. This field is available for single options and the parent and child rows of option strategies
    Theta Measure of the rate of decline in the value of an option due to the passage of time. This field is available for single options and the parent and child rows of option strategies
    Rho Rate at which the price of a derivative changes relative to a change in the risk-free rate of interest. This field is available for single options and the parent and child rows of option strategies
    Implied volatilityEstimated volatility of a security's price. This field is available for single options and strategy child rows. It will be blank for the parent row
    ITM flag Indicates if the option is in-the-money. This field is available for single options and strategy child rows. It will be blank for the parent row

  • IQ Edge

    To access the position tab:
    1. Log in to IQ Edge
    2. In the main toolbar, click Account
    3. From the Summary page, click Positions

    As shown below, you can view your investments by different asset types or group them by position, underlying, and strategy.

    By clicking Display by, you can view your investments by individual positions, orders, or strategy as well as grouping the underlying investments (for options traders).
    Right-clicking on a particular position gives you quick shortcuts to:

    • Creating orders
    • Creating a rollover order (for options)
    • Attaching a bracket order
    • Adding a symbol to the watchlist
    • Change position settings
    • Other features, as in the screenshot below


    By default, the platform shows you key information about your positions such as quantity, average price, current price, market value, and profit and loss. However, you can add more information about your positions. To do so:

    1. Click the down arrow
    2. Click Edit columns User-added image and a window will pop up with additional data that could be added to the position tab.
